A firewall is your first line of defense against nasty programs

being installed on your hard drive and keeping out intruders.  A backdoor is a passage through that line of defense.

Firewalls and Backdoors

A firewall's job is two-fold:

Sniper Firewall

Eliminate the threat before the threat eliminates you!

Sniper can see when someone is trying to hack your system and will initiate prevention measures to eliminate the threat before the threat eliminates your data and system operations.

1.  It's a filtering program that prevents certain kinds of programs from accessing your computer.  When the pre-set filter detects programming terms that are consistent with the language of harmful  and/or malicious programs, it blocks those programs from entering your computer and installing themselves on your hard drive.

2.  It's a barrier against unauthorized access to your hard drive, private files, and personal information by live people.

Entering my computer?  What does that mean?

Okay.  When you turn on your computer, just you, at your desk,  to play a game off the CD you bought, and your computer is not hooked up to any other computer, no one has access to  your main hard drive.  It's just you and your machine.

When your computer is hooked up to other computers in your house or business, you have what's called a network.  That means you can access those other computers, and people sitting at the other keyboards can access yours.  One big happy family.

UNLESS your computer or one of the other computers is connected to the Internet.  In that case, a worm or a virus or a hacker can enter your network through that computer and gain access to your hard drive.  Another member of the network can access your hard drive, too!

A firewall is your first line of defense to prevent nasty programs from installing on your hard drive and to keep out intruders.

So... if I install a firewall I'm safe, right?

Not entirely.  Your firewall is your first line of defense.  If your firewall is set on HIGH Security, then there are web sites you can't view, cool stuff you can't download, emails you can't receive, and other limitations you may not want.

If your firewall is set on MEDIUM Security, then you are keeping out a lot of unwanted intrusions, but not all of them.  You'll need some additional security software.

If your firewall is set on LOW Security, well... you're open to just about anything, and there are excellent security software programs such as SecureClean,  Patrol IT, and Registry Mechanic that will still keep you safe from harm, even on a LOW setting.
