Federal investigators say two women were running a check-forging operation out
of a Gary apartment that bilked $92,000 from a northern Michigan grocery store.
A search warrant approved by U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew Rodovich late last
month says the two women, Curtissa Rodriguez and Lynette Rodriguez, recruited
five other people to open Chicago bank accounts in which to cash the counterfeit
checks.
Both Rodriguezes were indicted by a grand jury in western Michigan on Dec. 7.
But when authorities went to arrest them at 820 N. County Line Road in Gary on
Dec. 22, the women refused to open the door.
"During the delay before entering the apartment, agents heard the rustling of
papers inside the apartment and what sounded like a paper shredder being
operated," an affidavit filed with the search warrant says.
Rodovich granted the Dec. 22 search warrant, in which agents requested
permission to seize any evidence of the counterfeiting operation, including
computer hard drives, disks and thumb drives. ...
